The recent rainfall had made the park come alive with scents. The soft smell of wet grass and the earthy, damp soil filled Hati’s nose, slowly enveloping his senses. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes, deliberately inhaling and exhaling, trying to circulate as much as the air as possible. It was a welcome change from the godawful stench of the city, wherever he went the wind seemed reek with the fragrances of some far-off pisstain, yesterday’s vomit or some putrid garbage. The park was as close to clean air he could ever get in Jiâ, or well, air not contaminated with some pungent odor. He doubted the air was actually clean, the smell of vegetation just masked the worst of it.
Though still, every now and then a wind would blow by, carrying the oh-so-familiar odor. He cringed slightly. He was alright in the city, when it was so inescapable you had no choice but to accept it until you nose went numb, but here, when he finally could breathe through his nose without having to fend off a headache, he just wanted it gone. He was just so sick of the damn city.. And not just the smell. The overcrowded streets, the loud masses of people, the lack of something edible that hadn't been irradiated halfway to oblivion or gone through so many processes that it barely qualified as food anymore..
Well, he had heard that there were decent meals to be had at some places, but it wasn't like he could afford it anyway.
He took another deep breath, the slight wrinkle at his brow smoothed out. Even though he was calm, the bitter taste of frustration still remained in his mouth, and a new sensation had settled in his gut. Hunger. He ground his teeth, fully aware of what little money he had wouldn't be enough to buy food, irradiated or not. Not that he would die or anything, he was a divine being.. More or less.. He had run for an eternity without having a single bite, he could probably make it another couple of days.. but still, it was not an experience he looked back upon with fond memories.
Another wind blew, rustling his hair and he mentally prepared himself to get another breathful of exhaust gas or something, but instead he caught the scent of something far more promising. It was faint, but unmistakable. In one smooth movement he slid off the bench he had been sitting on and onto the grass, changing back to his original form. With light paws he took off, claws digging into the dirt as he ran. Hopefully no one would take notice of the big, white wolf scurrying across the park in the middle of the night, at least not the extent where they would try to stop him. He had a mission and he was going to carry it out.
15 minutes passed, and then he was back on the footpath in human form again. Slung over his shoulders were there purpose of his sudden burst, a deer.. probably. It looked like one at least. True enough, it had an extra pair of legs and a third eye poking out of it's left temple but it was not the worst case of mutations he had seen, the creature was still recognizable, and there were no immediate cancerous growths. Not that he cared at this point. The blood from it's wounds had already soaked through the right side his shirt and stained his pants. He knew he couldn't stick around the park for too much longer looking like this. Luckily it was getting pretty late but he didn't really want to find out whether it was allowed to kill the park's wildlife or not. He just needed to find a secluded area to enjoy his meal.. He didn't really care about his clothes, his mind was solely focused on the prospect of food, yet his instincts made him keep going. Eating out in the open made him a target for.. for.. something. It just didn't feel right.
